How Much Does It Cost to Build a Composite Deck

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Composite Deck?

When you’re looking to build an outdoor living space, one of the first aspects to consider is the investment. While composite decking has a higher up-front cost than traditional wood, comparing the details of each material doesn’t give you the whole picture. In fact, there are a variety of factors that go into the cost of building a composite deck from the size of the space to the specific product that’s chosen for the project.

In this post, we’ll go through those factors so that you have a better idea on the type of composite deck that will fit your budget.

How Much Does Composite Decking Cost?

On average, the cost of composite decking ranges from $14 to $32 dollars per square foot, and we’re including the framing materials, decking, fasteners, etc. Part of the reason why the cost has a wide range is that many composite decking brands have a variety of collections at different price points to choose from. It’s important to mention that a large part of what makes the cost of composite decking is its durability and aesthetic.

For some more guidance on what it would cost to build a composite deck, we’ve included an easy-to-use calculator in this post. You can choose between some of the most popular layouts and Envision decking collections. Keep in mind, this calculator will give you a cost estimate of only the decking boards. You will have to include the cost of the framing, fasteners and labor if you choose to hire a contractor for your build.

*Price estimates generated are only for the cost of decking material, and retail prices may vary in different regions across the US.

Envision composite decking is the only product on the market that’s made with compression technology. It’s a proprietary process that creates a best-in-class bond between the cap and core. It’s resistant to chipping, warping, and splintering all while sporting a deep non-repeating grain that captures the natural elegance of wood.

Composite Deck Size Directly Influences the Cost

One of the biggest factors that will influence the cost of a composite deck is the size of the outdoor living space you’re looking to build. Not only does the deck size determine the cost of the composite decking, but it also gives you insight into the labor cost as well.

A 12 by 12-foot composite deck is a popular choice for homeowners. It has space for a variety of activities while being a good option for not going over budget. This type of deck would range from $2,000 to $5,000 dollars to complete the project. Based on that range, you can start to figure out what kind of space can be built for your budget.

The Long-Term Value of Composite Decking

Since the cost of composite decking is often compared to traditional wood, it’s important to break down the long-term value of each material. The initial cost of using traditional pressure treated wood is lower than composite decking. However, as time goes by, the cost will start to rise. With traditional wood, there’s regular maintenance that needs to happen. Typically, homeowners with wood decks spend an average of $700 to $1,000 dollars each year if keeping up with regular maintenance.

Much of that long-term cost comes from having to buy and apply sealant and deck cleaners. With composite decking, you won’t have those high ongoing maintenance costs, making it appealing for homeowners who are looking for their outdoor living space to retain value for years to come.

Why You Should Consider Grey Composite Decking

Why You Should Consider Grey Composite Decking

From paint, to furniture, and interior design trends, the color grey has been one of the most popular colors that inspires people. Over the last few years, grey has been forging its path from the inside of the home to outdoor living spaces. As a result, grey composite decking is a widely liked design trend that’s been a favorite for both homeowners and pros.

Let’s explore how grey composite has gained so much popularity and why it should be considered for your next outdoor living project.

An Envision composite deck with Alpine Fog from the Ridge Premium Collection.

Grey Composite Decking Has a Timeless Aesthetic

One of the main reasons why the color grey is popular among a wide range of building products is because of how neutral it is. Grey is like a chameleon; it can blend in and even complement a wide variety of design styles. Some grey composite decking like Envision, sports a modern and sleek look that evokes more emotion than other neutral colors.

Another factor to consider is that outdoor living spaces often change over the years. Whether it’s adding in a pergola or new furniture, grey composite decking will often blend in no matter what changes are made. Stark colors like dark browns, often found in traditional wood, can be harder to match with other elements as time passes. Plus, the aesthetic of wood will degrade over time, leading to time consuming and expensive upkeep.

Grey is Easy to Complement

With the investment that goes into creating an outdoor living space, you want to make sure the final aesthetic captures the true vision of the design. Whether you’re going for a classic rustic look or a more modern deck design, grey composite decking can fit into almost any style. By choosing grey composite decking for your project, there’s a sense of flexibility that gets added.

Grey by nature is a complementary color, which means you won’t have to worry about the look of any furniture, plants, or add-ons clashing with the decking. Think of grey composite decking as an open concept that gets more visually striking as you add in supporting elements.

Different Shades for Striking Grey Composite Decking Ideas

When the color grey first comes to mind, there’s a particular monotone shade that comes to mind. The good news is that outdoor living product brands like Envision offer composite decking with different shades of grey to support your ideal design. For example, Grey Wood from the Distinction Collection sports colors ranging dark gray to light grey woven into highlights throughout each board. If you’re looking for a lighter option to blend into the exterior of the home, Alpine Fog from the Ridge Premium Collection is a great option

If you choose grey composite decking for a project, you’re not locked into one specific shade. There’s room to flex your design creativity with a neutral color once you start exploring the spectrum of shades.

It’s Harder for Dirt to Breakthrough Grey

Looks are important when it comes to outdoor living spaces, and the color grey can keep a deck looking clean. Grey composite decking is known for being able to hide footprints, dust, and dirt just like a darker colored car. If there’s any dirt that does become noticeable, it’s worth pointing out that composite decking is easy to clean and isn’t susceptible to warping when it gets wet.

The Pros and Cons of Aluminum Railing

The Pros and Cons of Aluminum Deck Railing

For homeowners and pros, choosing the right type of deck railing for a project isn’t always an easy decision. After all, railing not only provides an important safety element, but also frames the aesthetic for the entire outdoor living space. As you weigh your decision, here are the pros and cons of aluminum deck railing.

When Should You Consider Aluminum Deck Railing?

From composite to steel to vinyl, there’s no shortage of deck railing materials to pick from for your outdoor living project. How does aluminum deck railing compare? To make the decision easier, let’s go through some of the main advantages of aluminum as a material.

  • Lightweight: One of the biggest advantages of aluminum deck railing is how lightweight the material is. That means you’ll usually have an easier time transporting and installing it for your outdoor living project.
  • Durability and Strength: Since aluminum is often used in consumer products like soda cans, you might assume the material is fragile; however, it’s actually very durable and can even stand up to some of the toughest weather conditions. With one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios of deck railing materials, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that it can even handle the heavy-duty applications found in commercial projects. Plus, the aluminum deck railing from our Fairway Railing Collection is powder coated for increased durability.
  • Low Maintenance: Aluminum deck railing is also highly regarded for its low maintenance. The powder-coating protects the material to help maintain its condition against the elements. Cleaning aluminum deck railing only requires a little soap and water.
  • Eco-Friendly: Aluminum is an eco-friendly material that can be recycled. If environmental considerations are important to your outdoor living project, aluminum is worth considering.

How Long Does Aluminum Deck Railing Last?

One of the most common questions you hear about aluminum deck railing is the longevity of the product. Unlike some other materials, aluminum is much less likely to degrade over time. In fact, if the aluminum railing has been powder coated, it could last for 20 years or more. It’s also worth noting that powder coated aluminum railing is more resistant to corrosion and weather.

Aluminum Deck Railing Ideas

One of the pros aluminum deck railings is that the material has design flexibility. For example, aluminum railing from our Fairway Railing Collection has a wide variety of infill options that suit almost any style. For a more rustic look, matte white railing with horizontal balusters is a great option. If a more modern aesthetic is more your style, textured black railing with a mesh infill offers a sleek profile.

When you’re designing an outdoor living space, you can bring almost any aluminum deck railing idea to life. The material is not only durable, but lightweight, which can give your design ideas more room for creativity.

What Are the Cons of Aluminum Deck Railing?

While there are some disadvantages to aluminum as a building material, most of them are minimal. For example, some people simply don’t like the look of aluminum deck railing because of its modern style. Along the same lines, there are some regions in the country where aluminum doesn’t fit with the trending style for outdoor living spaces.

Even though aluminum deck railing is durable, there’s a possibility that the finish can be scratched. If you’re moving deck furniture or if tools hit the railing during the construction of an outdoor living project, scratches can happen. The good news is that a powder-coating reduces the risk of the finish being damaged or nicked. Envision Outdoor Living Products does offer a touch-up pen to match the finish of your railing if this happens.

Envision Outdoor Living Offers Stand-Out Aluminum Deck Railing

We offer two styles of aluminum deck railing to choose from that are versatile and easy to install. The A210 sports a refined aesthetic while the A310 offers a more modern feel. Both of these railing options come in a variety of colors and infills that can complement your outdoor living space design.

In addition to the powder-coating, our aluminum deck railing also includes our noise-reducing technology in the top and bottom rails, so you won’t hear any rattling or vibrations.

Your Complete Guide to Composite Decking

Your Complete Guide to Composite Decking

In 2021, the country saw one of the most severe lumber shortages in history. The massive interest in outdoor living spaces and deck projects was one of the driving forces behind lumber prices hitting an all-time high of a 406% increase from the previous year, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

Ever since then, the popularity of composite decking continues to grow. With more homeowners re-investing into their property through remodeling projects, there’s more demand for outdoor living products that are stylish and build to perform. If you’re not familiar with composite decking or just interested in learning more, the experts at Envision are here to help. Join us as we share a complete guide to composite decking.

What Is Composite Decking?

Composite decking (or composite wood) is a lumber alternative that is man-made by combining recycled wood fibers and plastic. It’s also important to note that there are two primary types of composite decking boards, uncapped and capped.

Uncapped composite decking often has a more natural look but can be prone to mold and mildew growth that requires more frequent cleaning. Capped composite decking is manufactured with a hard capstock shell and offers more protection and resistance to the elements. It’s important to know that both these types of composite decking boards have their own applications and one is not inherently superior to the other.

Are Composite Decking Boards Worth It?

While composite decking boards might have an increase in cost compared to traditional wood, they offer higher durability and less maintenance. Composite wood brands like Envision Outdoor Living Products, also offers a wide range of colors and collections so there’s an option for almost any budget. To give you a better idea of the value composite decking can bring to your outdoor living project, let’s take a look at some of the benefits.

The Benefits of Composite Decking

Why should homeowners and contractors choose composite decking? Let’s dive into the benefits.

  • Composite Decking Is Durable: Since it features that durable capped finish, composite decking boards are engineered to be more resistant to warping, splitting, cracking, and insects. Unlike traditional wood, composite decking also does a better job keeping moisture out while retaining its color.
  • Low Maintenance: Did you know that traditional wooden decks usually need to undergo maintenance at least every three years? And the added work doesn’t stop there, wooden decks also need to be checked for any warping or cracks. Composite wood doesn’t need any of that regular maintenance to maintain its appearance and integrity. There’s quick cleanup of any spills and simply rinsing off any residue on the surface is enough for it to stay looking great every season.
  • A Look That Doesn’t Impact Performance: With a traditional wooden deck, choosing the right natural color can become complicated. Each type of wood has its own unique hardness rating. You could find a natural color you like only to realize that you’d have to compromise on durability. With Envision composite decking, you’re able to showcase your style without worrying about its impact on durability.
  • More Aesthetic Options: One of the unique advantages of composite decking is the flexibility to choose a color and style that suits your project. For example, the Distinction Collection offers rich colors and bold highlights, while the Ridge Premium Collection has the appearance of reclaimed wood aged on the rustic countryside. Pair multiple colors for a look that’s completely custom.
  • Save Money Long-term: While composite decking might be more expensive than traditional wood up front, that investment pays off in the future. Not only are composite decks cheaper to maintain, but you’ll typically end up paying less for repairs and upkeep.

How Much Does Composite Decking Cost?

One of most common questions about composite decking is, “how much does it cost”? On average, composite decking boards cost between $25 to $60 dollars a square foot installed compared to the $20 to $45 dollar range of traditional wood. Even though the initial difference in cost seems obvious, there’s more to consider.

For starters, most traditional wood does not come with a warranty, which means you would pay out of pocket for potential replacement boards. As we mentioned above, traditional wood is much more expensive in time and money to maintain. On average, a 20×20 wood deck would cost roughly $1,200 a year for the upkeep

What Sets Envision Composite Decking Apart?

Even though composite decking products share some overall characteristics, not all brands are created equal. Brands like Envision strive to ensure that the materials you choose for an outdoor living project have the highest quality. What makes Envision composite decking boards stand apart from other brands? Let’s take a closer look at the Envision Difference.

Envision Uses Compression Technology

Envision is the only composite decking that’s made from compression molding rather than extrusion. Our proprietary Compress Technology™ uses tremendous heat and pressure to physically bond the high-density cap and the EverGrain Core™, squeezing out air pockets for a board that is beautiful as well as dense, strong and engineered to last.

Starting with a Strong Core

All Envision composite decking is built with on our EverGrain core – a product that’s been proven in high-traffic areas for more than 20 years. With that EverGrain Core, our composite decking products are resistant to splitting, insects, rot, and splinters. That’s why Envision composite decking is trusted across the country by stadiums, national parks, homeowners and contractors.

An Unmatched Style

Part of what makes Envision composite decking unique is that there’s a color and aesthetic for almost every outdoor living project. With Envision, you have the flexibility to pick the perfect color, add accents or even mix and match to achieve a unique style for your project. Combine that with our non-repeating grain, and you get composite decking that mirrors the unique beauty of nature.

1. Warmth by the Fire

What better way to complement the warmth and natural tones of Envision composite decking than adding a little fire to the space. Fire pits and fireplaces have gained a lot of popularity this year. Not only does a fire pit help you enjoy an outdoor living space once the sun starts to go down and into the fall and winter, but it also adds to the relaxing ambiance that so many homeowners are going for. Plus, there are a wide variety of fire pit options that offer the perfect fit no matter the size of the deck.

2. Outdoor Working Spaces

As more professionals embrace the working from home model as the new normal, homeowners are getting creative with their working space. This includes setting up a desk or table on the deck to introduce some fresh air into the workday. This trend is part of the reason why there’s been an increase in outdoor furniture sales this year.

3. Vertical Gardens for a Fresh Look

For people who have always wanted a garden but lacked the space, this outdoor living trend has come to the rescue. Vertical gardens have exploded in popularity because of how they’re able to save space while offering a welcoming and functional aesthetic. All you need to start is hanging some planter boxes using ladder shelves up a wall in a sunny spot.

4. Composite Decking Inlays

For those looking to take outdoor living design to the next level, incorporating an inlay is a great option. It’s an opportunity to create a striking pattern with a complementary composite decking color. A decking inlay can give any outdoor living space a new focal point that becomes the envy of the neighborhood.

5. Hot Tubs on the Deck

While hot tubs aren’t the newest outdoor living trend, they’re making a comeback in 2022. More homeowners are looking to add a hot tub that’s built into their outdoor living space. Since more people are trying to find ways to spend more time at home, a hot tub is a perfect oasis for relaxing and hosting loved ones.

6. Inviting Color Schemes

Every year, there are composite decking colors that become on trend for outdoor living spaces. In 2022, homeowners are interested in lighter, more welcoming colors for their decks. For composite decking, this means that light greys and browns gaining ground. The Ridge Premium Collection can take your project to the next level with two new softly blended colors that offer a high-end, natural looking finish.

7. Pizza Ovens

Outdoor kitchens have been popular for the last few years, but there’s been a recent rise in the popularity of pizza ovens. They’re a great feature to have for those who have families or like to entertain. Plus, they’re easy to use and even come in more compact options if your outdoor living space design doesn’t have room for an entire kitchen.

8. Outdoor Dining Table

As a natural complement to outdoor kitchens, more decks are working a dining table into the final design. One of the great aspects of outdoor dining tables is how versatile they are—they’re suitable for family dinners, studying, an outdoor workspace, and more.

9. Adding Plants to the Space

For an added touch of personality, homeowners are incorporating plants into their outdoor living spaces more and more. There are a wide variety of plants you can use to enhance outdoor spaces, and it’s a great opportunity to add a unique touch. Perennials, for example, are ideal starter plants since they only need to be planted once and can regrow each season.

10. Outdoor Lighting

Deck lighting is still a very popular outdoor living trend in 2022. Adding lighting to the outdoor living space transforms the deck into a place that can be enjoyed no matter the time of day. It also opens up unique design possibilities, like setting lights inside the deck stairs and helps set the ambiance of the space

Your Deck Permit Questions Answered

Answering Homeowner Deck Permit Questions

As a homeowner, there’s no shortage of steps for creating your dream outdoor living space. From picking out the right composite decking material, to thinking about what types of activities you want to use it for, it’s easy for the more administrative tasks like getting a deck permit to slip your mind.

Since so many aspects of building a composite deck are easily accessible, it’s natural for the process of getting a permit to be a little intimidating at first glance. In our experience at Envision Outdoor Living, it’s common for homeowners to have questions about getting a permit to build a deck. Join us as we answer some of those questions to help keep your outdoor living space project moving forward.

Do You Need a Permit to Build a Deck?

Let’s tackle the main question first. In most cities around the country, you’ll need some form of a permit before the construction of a deck starts. For a definitive answer, start by contacting your local municipality. The specific requirements for a deck permit vary from city to city, so your local government is the trusted source you should follow.

It’s also important to note that the local building codes in your area can even vary depending on the property lines or unique aspects of your specific house. When you call your local municipality, have your address and lot number (if it applies to you) ready to go.

What Does the Deck Permit Process Look Like?

Even though the more exact details of the deck permit process can change, it’s helpful to know the steps you’re likely to experience. A basic procedure of getting a deck permit has four steps that include:

  • Zoning: First, you or your contractor will have to show the city that the deck being built fits within the property lines of your home. Many cities will require a detailed plan drawn up to back this up.
  • Planning: There are some cities and communities/neighborhoods that require the deck to match a particular style or aesthetic.
  • Safety: Next up, there are usually several safety measures that the city needs to make sure your deck will have. Oftentimes this includes making sure the deck doesn’t interfere with any existing structures or natural resources like a gas line. If the deck is going to be near water, you’ll have to prove the deck isn’t susceptible to flooding.
  • Taxes: In most cities before a deck permit is issued, they will check to see if you’re up to date on your property taxes.

Who Is Expected to Get the Deck Permit?

If your plan for the deck is a full DIY project, the responsibility for getting the deck permit is entirely on you as the homeowner. However, if you’re working with a contractor, they’ll typically handle getting the permit and will often know any unique challenges the local city could present. Since the contractor adds convenience to the project by taking care of the permit, you’ll have more time to work out what style and products you want.

For the DIY route, you’re going to need specifics about the outdoor living space to get the permit. Before starting the process to get the permit from your local municipality, it will help to know:

  • The exact size/dimensions of the deck.
  • Details on the layout for the decking joists, posts, and beams.
  • The type of foundation the deck is going to be placed on, and what the height of the deck will be.

Is a Permit Required for Extending Your Deck?

Like when an extension is added onto a house, most cities will still require a permit for extending a deck. The requirements to get a deck extension permit usually follow a similar path to what we’ve outlined above.

Turn Your Dream Outdoor Living Space into a Reality with Envision

Outside of getting a deck permit squared away, there are plenty of other ways to help set up your outdoor living project for success. Sandstone Redefines the Beauty of Earth Tones

Much like the desert that inspired its name, Sandstone perfectly mixes sandy and honey hues for a simple refined beauty with a rich foundation of earth tones. 5 Popular Composite Deck Features

Whether you’re a homeowner or pro, creating a picturesque outdoor living space takes time and thoughtful consideration. More people are breaking away from building basic decks to create spaces that complement their hobbies and lifestyles. That’s why understanding the latest composite decking ideas and features is essential during the planning process.

Join the experts at Envision Outdoor Living Products as we break down five of the most popular composite deck features to consider for your project.

1. Deck Lighting Adds Style and Function

There’s a good reason why lighting is one of the most popular accessories for composite decking designs. This feature can truly bring any outdoor living space to life by adding a sense of style and a welcoming atmosphere even after the sun sets. Since building a deck is an investment, deck lighting helps get more value and usage out of the space.

One of the great aspects of deck lighting is that you can choose how complex you want it to be. For example, an experienced pro can install solar-powered deck lights, or you could choose a more DIY-friendly plug-and-play deck light kit.

Deck lighting also provides an opportunity to highlight key features of the space. Step lights offer stylish wayfinding, for example, and post cap lights create standout views.

2. Outdoor Kitchens

One of the most popular deck trends, an outdoor kitchen transforms the space into an entertaining spot. If you’re a homeowner who wants an outdoor kitchen, it’s important to talk with your contractor as soon as possible. Unlike some of the other composite decking designs we’ll talk about, it’s often much harder to add a kitchen to an already finished space.

Aim to have a complete picture of how the outdoor kitchen will look. That way, a pro can plan ahead for the extra weight when designing the deck frame and build in easier access for any appliance hookups.

3. Include a Pergola in the Composite Decking Design

Are you looking for a way to achieve a more modern look for your composite deck design? A pergola could be the answer you’re looking for. Pergolas are striking shade structures that can be built to complement almost any design or composite deck color while also keeping people more protected from the sun. Pergolas are easier to build than many people think; it’s a great DIY project with plenty of detailed instructions that can be found online.

4. Fire Pits Add Atmosphere

Imagine watching the sun set from your deck with the gentle roar of fire adding a sense of light and warmth. More homeowners are adding a fire pit to their outdoor living space to have another area for hosting and relaxation.

Whether you’re a homeowner or pro, it’s important to get a full understanding of the deck before putting a fire pit in. Make sure the fire pit is on a level part of the deck with a flame that is small and more controllable. This is part of the reason why portable table style fire pits are popular for composite decks.

5. Built In Composite Decking Inlays

One of the ways to bring out the true visual potential of composite decking is to incorporate inlays—deck boards in different colors or orientations to create a design or pattern—into the surface. Since adding an inlay requires a high level of technical expertise, it’s recommended to let a pro handle it. This sentiment is especially true for more complex inlay patterns, like a star.

By adding an inlay into the space, you get the opportunity to use more than one color in the composite decking design. This contrast is not only a conversation starter but can easily tie the entire aesthetic of the deck together.
