Can You Install Fire Pits on Composite Decking?

Outdoor living spaces are the new heart of the home. They’ve become destinations where people go to relax, host loved ones, and take staycations to the next level. As you’re thinking of ideas on how to design an upcoming deck project, you might be considering including a fire pit.

Fire pits have been a staple feature in backyards for decades. However, many people have questions about whether it’s safe for fire pits to be installed on composite decking. Learn the answer along with alternative options below.

Is It Safe to Put a Fire Pit on Composite Decking?

Generally, it is safe to install a fire pit on composite decking. However, you’ll want to follow several precautions to reduce the risk of a fire starting. While composite decking is much more fire resistant than traditional wood, there is the potential that it can be damaged by intense heat. When including a fire pit on a composite deck, you’ll want to:

  • Avoid having a fire pit directly touching the composite deck boards.
  • Keep the fire pit away from furniture, plants, or any other flammable material.
  • Consider avoiding a wood burning pit since the sparks and embers increase the risk of a fire.

A Look at Composite Decking and Heat

Even though composite decking boards are fire resistant, high temperatures will cause damage. If unprotected, a fire that is giving off heat that is 200 degrees or hotter can start to warp composite decking, with the material becoming prone to melting at 300 degrees. Many of the common types of fire pits reach 400 degrees, so it’s important to take precautions.

Whenever you’re looking to install a fire pit on a composite deck, be sure to include a fire pit barrier and mat. Both items will not only help protect the boards from high heat, but they’ll also tie together the visual aesthetic of the space.

What Types of Fire Pits Are Best for Composite Decks?

As we hinted at above, there are different types of fire pits you can install on a composite deck. Each product comes with its own considerations and has a slightly different visual style.

  • Electric Fire Pits: Electric fire pits have more controlled temperatures, making them one of the safest options for composite decks. While they’re slightly more expensive than wood-burning fire pits, they’re also low maintenance and very easy to use.
  • Propane Fire Pits: Propane fire pits are also a safe option since they don’t emit any embers. They can be installed on top of a composite deck without any issues and are easy to control. It’s worth noting that the legs on propane fire pits can get very hot. To minimize the risk of damage, you’ll want to have a mat or barrier to protect the deck boards underneath.
  • Gas Fire Tables: If you’re looking for something different, a gas fire table is worth considering. They often have built-in heat controls and a concrete or stone exterior to protect the composite decking.
  • Wood Burning Fire Pits: While wood burning fire pits are not recommended to be used on composite decking, be sure to use a fire mat if you do. A protective fire mat will catch any falling embers to help prevent the deck from catching fire.

Fire Pit Safety Tips for Composite Decks

No matter which type of fire pit you choose for your composite deck, it’s important to follow these safety tips:

  • Be sure to keep a fire extinguisher on your outdoor living space just in case you need to put out or control a fire.
  • Make sure that any fire pit you install is at least 10 feet away from the exterior of the home.
  • Do not leave a fire pit unattended, especially on windy days where embers or sparks can be carried across the space.
  • For gas and propane fire pits, turn off the fuel supply before leaving your outdoor living space.
