Should You Build Your Own Deck or Hire a Pro? Wednesday August 11, 2021

You’ve decided to take the leap and add a deck onto your home. Now comes the next big decision: Do you put your DIY skills to the test and build the deck yourself or spend the extra money to have a pro take care of the work.

Here are a few questions to consider.

Are you confident in your DIY skills?

If you’re just getting started with home improvement projects, including how to perform basic tasks and use tools, it may be best to wait until you have a few smaller projects under your belt. But if you have experience and confidence, a deck may be within reach.

How challenging is the space?

There’s a big difference between installing a ground-level deck and a second-story deck on a sloping lot. The higher the deck and the steeper the yard, the more complicated the task. Leave it to a pro or at the very least bring in a consultant to assist.

How complicated is the deck?

A simple, rectangular, single-color deck at ground level is straightforward to plan and install. But adding trendy elements like picture framing, inlays, and divider boards requires more planning and more savvy. Adding multiple levels also adds complications that might be better suited to a professional.

Does the deck include steps?

Stairs are one of the hardest things to build, even for pros, requiring careful calculations and attention to detail. Stairs that are off by even a small amount can be uncomfortable or dangerous. A ground-level deck with a long, single step is likely manageable, but a traditional stairway, especially with turns and landings, can be complicated for non-professionals.

Are you detail-oriented?

Do your research into what’s required beyond just building the deck. For example, most decks will require a building permits and inspections, and you’ll need to “call before you dig” when installing posts and footings. You’ll also need to understand applicable building codes.
