Top Tips for Cleaning Composite Decking

With more people spending time in outdoor living spaces than ever before, it’s a great opportunity to brush up on some of the best ways to clean a composite deck. Follow these essential cleaning tips so you’ll be ready to host your next outdoor gathering.

When Should You Clean a Composite Deck?

Experts agree that you should clean a composite deck at least twice a year. As far as the weather is concerned, try to plan for a mild sunny day. When you’re in direct sunlight, it’s best to work in small sections. This helps ensure that any cleaning solution you’re using doesn’t completely dry out before you get a chance to rinse it off.

There are times when just rinsing off a composite deck is enough to reduce dirt, grime, and other residue build-up. If you go this route, you can use a garden hose or a pressure washer, just don’t use a nozzle that is higher than 1,000 psi.

How to Clean a Composite Deck

Before we dive into more specific cleaning tips, let’s go over some of the basics. Most  composite decking is designed to be easy to clean. In most cases, all you’ll need is a nylon brush, a little soap, and some warm water.

Next, you’ll want to:

  • Clear away any outdoor furniture or décor that will get in the way of cleaning the deck.
  • Sweep off any loose debris from the surface of the deck.
  • Rinse the surface with water, then use the brush to gently scrub the composite deck boards.
  • Finally, rinse off the soap with water.

Avoid Cooking Oil and Grease Stains

To keep your composite deck in the best possible shape, do your best to reduce the amount of cooking oil and grease stains that occur in the first place. Place grill mats around the cooking area of your outdoor living space to reduce the risk.

If a few stains make their way through, there’s no need to worry. Using a multi-purpose cleaner, gently scrub oil and grease stains off the deck. It’s important to clean these stains as quickly as possible—the longer the oil or grease has to dry, the harder it will be to remove.

How to Clear Out Mold and Mildew from a Composite Deck

One of the benefits of having a composite deck is that the material is more resistant to mold and mildew build-up compared to traditional wood. However, there are occasions where you may find mold and mildew on your outdoor living space if leaves and other natural debris build up. This build up occurs more often in climates that have higher levels of moisture.

To remove mold and mildew, a cleaner with sodium hypochlorite is recommended. Try products like Mold Armor Deck Wash or OLYMPIC Deck Cleaner and wait 10 to 15 minutes after its application before rinsing it off. (Always follow cleaner instructions for protection such as gloves and masks.)
