As we enter the second half of 2020, it’s evident that this summer will be much different than any prior.
Many people are still working from home and are in somewhat established routines. Kids have been home on an extended break for several months now, with a few months left before the school year starts back up. Vacation plans have been changed or cancelled all together.
All this has given us much more time at home than we’ve ever had. Leaving many of us looking around our homes wondering how we can take advantage of spaces that may be underutilized – maybe you’re even reallocating some of that vacation budget toward projects around the house.
Your outdoor spaces are a great place to look when it comes to better-utilizing, or even expanding, your living space.
Work space
While working from home is proving to be productive, beneficial, and even preferred by many, it doesn’t come without it’s challenges. Sharing a work space with a partner or children can be challenging at times, and nearly impossible at others.
Creating a space outdoors – whether on your deck, patio, front porch, or by the pool – where you can focus can be a boost to your productivity. Even if it’s for only a short time. A comfortable chair, a table top, and some shade can help get you back on track.
Cooking and dining space
Summer and grilling go hand in hand, and is a favorite pastime in most households. Taking a break from the kitchen to fire up the grill is something that many look forward to once the weather warms up.
Now is a great time to experiment with some new recipes or cooking methods (hello, new smoker!).
You can even take advantage of this extra time at home to enjoy your deck for a different meal – like breakfast. Who wouldn’t love some bacon and eggs while listening to the birds chirping in the morning?
Family space
Getting outside is always a great way to spend time, but it may take a little creativity if everyone is going a bit stir crazy.
With young kids, moving craft time or a tea party to the deck can change up a routine and give play time a new twist.
If you have the space for it, a projector pointed at the side of your house, or even a fence, can make for a fun family movie night. Grab the popcorn and a cozy blanket and head outside!
If all else fails, you can always break out the sprinkler. It’s a classic that will put a smile on everyone’s face.
Individual space
With as much togetherness as most families are experiencing, it’s also important to take time for yourself. Even if it’s a quick cup of coffee on the deck in the morning, or some time to sneak away in the evening – create a space where you can go to find a few moments of quiet and some fresh air.
While this summer may not be what we had planned, there are plenty of ways to make the best of it.
Whether you simply re-organize your outdoor furniture to create new spaces or completely overhaul your backyard with a new deck and outdoor kitchen, taking advantage of the little-used spaces you have around your home, and extending into those outdoor areas, can make it feel brand new.
