What is the Right Deck Railing Height? Tuesday August 20, 2024

What Deck Railing Height Should I Use?

Designing an outdoor living space involves many components, one of which is the deck railing height. You need to consider the height and which deck railing technology will best suit your project aesthetically.

Let us help you determine the right deck railing height for your residential or commercial space.

When is Deck Railing Required?

Deck railing height is typically required by building codes to ensure safety for the residents. Typically, the guidelines are:

Residential spaces: In most residential areas, deck railing is required if your deck is more than 30 inches off the ground. The standard deck railing height is typically between 36 and 42 inches.

Commercial spaces: The requirements are much stricter for commercial properties. Commercial deck railings often need to be at least 42 inches high, regardless of the deck height, to ensure the safety of areas with higher foot traffic and potential liability issues.

With our Fairway Railing Collection, you have the choice of aluminum, composite, vinyl, cellular PVC, steel, and tri-layer railing technologies  – all available in 36” and 42” heights with various lengths depending on technology, and many color and infill options to fit nearly any aesthetic. All our railing technologies meet IRC and IBC standards.

Aesthetic Choice

Regardless of whether deck railing is a legal requirement, it can be an invaluable addition to your outdoor living space. Adding railing can help define the space, heighten the aesthetic, and provide a sense of enclosure and security for you and your loved ones.

When it comes to aesthetics, you’ve got plenty of wiggle room to match it to your style and the overall look of your outdoor area. Take into account your home’s design and whether you want to maintain views or privacy. Our railing options will give you room to get creative while ensuring your deck remains a striking and welcoming addition to your home.

ADA Handrail Requirements

If you want your deck accessible to individuals with disabilities, you must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards for handrails.

The ADA-compliant handrails should be between 34 and 38 inches in height. For the grip size, the handrail should have a circular cross-section with an outside diameter of 1.25 to 2 inches, or if it is non-circular, it should have a perimeter dimension of 4 to 6.25 inches. Handrails should extend horizontally above the landing for at least 12 inches beyond the top and bottom of the ramp or stairs.

Our A210 aluminum railing and vinyl railings include an ADA secondary handrail in matching colors, and installation instructions are available on our website.

Comparing Residential and Commercial Deck Railing Heights

Residential

Picking the perfect deck railing height for your home is all about finding the right balance between safety, functionality, and style. Even though building codes typically call for a minimum height of 36 inches for raised decks, it’s important to consider your specific preferences and needs. By knowing the rules and weighing factors like the view, materials, and how you use your deck, you can craft a stunning and secure outdoor area that adds value and charm to your home.

Always double-check with local authorities and consider getting advice from a pro to ensure that your deck railing meets regulations and flawlessly fits your outdoor space.
